1.      During a rainy or stormy weather, try to spot and mark the area where the water is coming from to be able know where to start your search.

2.      Wait for the climate condition to become good again; most preferably a sunny day to lessen the possibilities of injury when getting atop the roof. Search the area where you spot the leakage from the inside of your house. When spotted, use chalk or tape to mark the area.

3.      In the area where you marked with chalk or tape, try to inspect the layer. Look for loose or missing roof shingles. Assume that the leaks inside the house are lower than that of above the roof because the water travels from the top through the other roofing materials and into the holes then down.

4.      Roof leak repair doesn’t only happen on the roofing shingles. Also try to survey the flashing and the ridge cap because sometimes, leaks also happen in those places.

5.      If you find it difficult to do the roof leak repair by searching, use water to spot them. Soak the roof with water portion by portion until you spot leak. Ask for help from someone to spot the leak from the inside of the house. Coordinate with that someone by doing the spraying one at a time in 10 to 15 minutes. This method will help you locate the area of the leak more accurately.

Roof Repair Tips: Mending the Leakage

1.      If necessary, substitute every damage piece to avoid worsening the condition of the roof.

2.      Strip the portion of the roof using other roof materials such as a pry bar, and cover the small holes with roofing cement. Apply the roofing cement over the tape you mark with a trowel and let it harden. Then, put back the portion of the roof that you peel firmly.

3.      Using a knife, slice a portion of the aluminum flashing about 1 inch thinner and 4 inches larger than the destroyed shingle tabs and compress the edges of the flashing with a rubber mallet. Pull out the damaged roof shingles then apply the roofing cement about two to three lines beneath the area where the shingles were located. After applying the cement, slide in the flashing that you have cut underneath every shingles. Apply a certain amount of pressure on the flashing to lock it to the cement. Once it’s locked, apply another batch of cement about two to three rows over the secured flashing then set the shingles back in position. Let the roofing cement dry and harden.
